London Xero and QuickBooks Accountants Who Advise, Not Just Record

GM Professional Accountants helps SMEs use the numbers already sitting in Xero or QuickBooks to forecast cash flow, control costs, stay Making Tax Digital compliant and plan growth with confidence.

From our London offices in Old Street, Wimbledon, Ilford and Loughton, we support owner-managed businesses across the UK with setup, migration, monthly reporting and senior-level advisory.

Key Takeaways

Xero and QuickBooks are both HMRC-recognised for Making Tax Digital. The right choice depends on your users, integrations and sector.
MTD for Income Tax has applied to sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 since April 2026, dropping to £30,000 in April 2027 and £20,000 in April 2028.
Advisory turns your cloud data into 13-week cash forecasts, budgets and KPI dashboards rather than year-end history.
We handle migration from Sage, Excel or desktop software, including historic balances and bank feeds.

Why Cloud Accounting Matters for Your SME

Real-time financial data is only valuable when someone turns it into decisions

Real-Time Reporting

Live figures for sales, expenses and cash mean your monthly review starts from accurate numbers, not a spreadsheet rebuilt from scratch.

Seamless Integrations

Connect payment gateways, eCommerce stores, CRM and payroll tools to cut manual entry and errors.

Scalability

Add users, entities and currencies as you grow without changing systems or losing history.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax: What Changed in 2026?

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is now live. Sole traders and landlords whose qualifying income from self-employment and property exceeds the threshold must keep digital records and send quarterly updates to HMRC using compatible software such as Xero or QuickBooks.

April 2026Qualifying income over £50,000
April 2027Qualifying income over £30,000
April 2028Qualifying income over £20,000

Many SME owners also hold rental property or run a side business, so MTD can apply to you personally even if your company is already on cloud software. We set up the right structure in Xero or QuickBooks, file the quarterly updates and make sure the year-end figures reconcile. Landlords can also see our property accounting service. Switching to Xero or QuickBooks: How Migration Works

Moving from Sage, desktop software or spreadsheets without losing history or disrupting VAT periods

STAGE 1

Review and Plan

We review your current records, agree a conversion date (ideally the start of a VAT quarter) and decide how much history to bring across.

STAGE 2

Chart of Accounts and Balances

We design a chart of accounts that matches how you report, then load opening balances, open invoices and bills.

STAGE 3

Bank Feeds and Apps

Bank feeds, bank rules, payroll and connected apps are set up and tested so daily coding becomes largely automatic.

STAGE 4

Reconcile and Train

We reconcile the first period against your old system and train your team, so nothing is lost and everyone is confident from day one.

Timelines depend on transaction volume and how many years of history you need. We agree a fixed timeline before work starts.

How We Use Xero and QuickBooks Across Sectors

The same software, set up very differently depending on how your business makes money

Construction

CIS deductions, job costing by project and retention tracking, so you can see which contracts actually make a profit.

Retail and eCommerce

Professional Services

Time and project tracking, utilisation and work-in-progress reporting for consultancies and agencies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions SME owners ask us most

What are advisory accountant services for SMEs?

Advisory accountant services go beyond bookkeeping and tax filing. They provide financial analysis, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management and strategic advice to help SMEs grow sustainably and profitably.

Should my limited company use Xero or QuickBooks?

Both work well for UK limited companies. Xero often suits growing businesses that need several users and many app integrations, while QuickBooks suits smaller companies that want simple invoicing and a strong mobile app. We recommend based on your users, sector and reporting needs.

How long does it take to migrate to Xero or QuickBooks?

It depends on your transaction volume and how much history you bring across. We agree a fixed timeline before starting and usually aim to switch at the start of a VAT quarter so your returns are not disrupted.

Can you fix a messy Xero or QuickBooks file?

Yes. We regularly clean up files with unreconciled bank accounts, duplicate transactions and incorrect VAT coding, then set up bank rules and a monthly routine so the problems do not return.

Do Xero and QuickBooks work with Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?

Yes. Both are compatible with HMRC’s Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, which has applied to sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 since April 2026. The threshold falls to £30,000 in April 2027 and £20,000 in April 2028.

Can GM Professional Accountants help with budgeting and cash flow forecasting?

Yes. We create budgets and rolling forecasts, analyse variances and implement cash flow management using Xero or QuickBooks to improve visibility and planning for your specific business cycle.

Do you work with SMEs outside London?

Yes. We have offices in Old Street, Wimbledon, Ilford and Loughton, and because Xero and QuickBooks are cloud-based we support SMEs across the UK with video meetings and shared dashboards.

Why choose GM Professional Accountants for SME advisory services?

We are an AAT regulated practice with Xero Platinum Partner and QuickBooks Advanced Solution Provider status, ISO 27001 security certification and experience supporting 500+ SMEs, delivering advisory tailored to your business.

Do you support businesses with cross-border operations?

Yes. Sharaz Zaman and the team advise SMEs operating across the UK and Qatar, including British expats and internationally trading businesses that need multi-currency and cross-jurisdiction financial management.
